Closet rod height: the standard measurements, and when to break them

Most closet rods go in at the same handful of heights, and those numbers come from garment lengths, not convention. Here are the standards for single, double, and long-hang rods, how far the rod sits from the wall, and how to adjust for your own clothes.

🔧 The short version

  • 01Standard single-rod height is 66 inches from the floor to the top of the rod. Anywhere from 60" to 72" is normal depending on what you hang and how tall you are.
  • 02Double-hang: upper rod at about 80–84", lower rod at about 40–42". Both rods hold short items (shirts, jackets, folded pants).
  • 03Mount the rod about 12" out from the back wall (measured to the rod's center) and leave about 2" between the top of the rod and any shelf above so hangers lift off easily.

Standard closet rod heights

These are the numbers closet designers and builders work from. They're starting points: adjust them to your clothes and your reach.

Closet rod height chart: single-hang rod at 66 inches, double-hang rods at 81 and 41 inches
Standard heights, measured from the finished floor to the top of the rod.
SetupRod height (floor to top of rod)
Single rod, general use66" (range 60–72")
Long-hang section (dresses, coats, robes)68–72"
Double-hang, upper rod80–84"
Double-hang, lower rod40–42"
Wheelchair-accessible rodno higher than 48"
Kids' closet36–48", raised as they grow
Measure from the finished floor. If carpet or new flooring is going in after the closet, add its thickness to every measurement, or long items will end up brushing the floor.

Work backward from your longest item

The reliable way to set a rod height is to hang your longest garment on a hanger and measure from the top of the hanger hook to the hem. Add a few inches so the hem clears the floor (or the lower rod), and that is your minimum rod height.

What you hangApprox. hanging length needed
Shirts, blouses, folded-over pants~38–40"
Suit jackets, blazers~40–42"
Pants hung full-length (by the cuff)~44–48"
Dresses, knee-length coats~50–60"
Long coats, maxi dresses, robes~62–69"+

This is why double-hang works so well for shirts and jackets. About 40" of drop fits comfortably under an upper rod at 81" and above the floor from a lower rod at 41". It is also why long items need their own single-hang section instead of the upper rod of a double-hang stack: hang them there and they drape over the clothes on the rod below.

Double-hang heights

MeasurementStandard
Upper rod height~80–84"
Lower rod height~40–42"
Vertical gap between the rods~40"
Clearance above upper rod (if shelf present)~2"

Set the upper rod first, at a height you can still reach comfortably. If 84" is a stretch, drop it to 80" and bring the lower rod down to match, keeping roughly 40" between them. If the upper rod ends up out of reach, a pull-down closet rod brings it down to you. For the full double closet rod heights and spacing table and bracket options, see the double closet rod guide.

Distance from the wall and from the shelf

Center the rod 12" from the back wall so an 18" hanger clears the wall and the closet front.
Back wall

~12" to the center of the rod

A typical adult hanger is about 17–19" wide, so the rod needs to sit about half that plus a little clearance away from the back wall. 12" is the standard; 10" is the practical minimum before shoulders start rubbing the wall. That's also why 24" is the standard closet depth.

Shelf above

~2" from top of rod to shelf

Hanger hooks need room to lift up and off the rod. With less than about 2", hangers catch on the shelf every time you pull one out. Rod-and-shelf combo brackets build this gap in for you.

How to mark the height

  • Measure up from the floor on one side wall and mark your rod height. Remember this is the top of the rod, so the bracket's cup will sit slightly below the mark.
  • Level across to the opposite wall with a 4-ft level or a laser. Don't measure up from the floor again on the second side, because floors are rarely level.
  • Mark 12" out from the back wall on both sides for the rod's center line.
  • Find the studs. Brackets should go into studs or into a wood cleat screwed to studs. See the heavy duty closet rod guide for the cleat method.
  • Check the span. If the rod is longer than the limits below, add a center support.
Rod typeMax unsupported span
Oval rods (steel or aluminum)~4 ft
Round, 1-1/16" diameter~5 ft

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard closet rod height?

For a single rod, 66" from the floor to the top of the rod. It gives most adult clothing room to hang with the hem clear of the floor, while staying within easy reach.

How high should closet rods be for double hanging?

Put the upper rod at about 80–84" and the lower rod at about 40–42", roughly 40" apart. Use both rods for shirts, jackets, and folded pants, and keep dresses and long coats in a separate single-hang section.

How far should a closet rod be from the back wall?

About 12" from the back wall to the center of the rod. Go much closer and hangers will rub the wall; 10" is the practical minimum.

How much space should be between a closet rod and the shelf above it?

About 2" between the top of the rod and the underside of the shelf. That's enough room to lift a hanger hook off the rod without catching it.

Is 60 inches too low for a closet rod?

Not for short items or shorter people. At 60", shirts and jackets hang fine. Dresses and long coats will likely brush the floor, so give those a higher rod or a dedicated long-hang section.

What height is an accessible closet rod?

For a wheelchair user reaching forward, keep the rod at 48" or lower, the upper limit of the ADA forward reach range. An adjustable-height or pull-down rod is another way to get there.
